But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. 1Peter 5:10-11
When we are suffering, we often feel as though our pain will never end. In comparison with eternity, our suffering would last only “a little while.” Some would be strengthened and delivered in their lifetimes. Others would be released from their suffering through death. All of God’s faithful followers are assured of the eternal life with Christ, where there will be no more suffering.
True victory in persecution is to see God behind the scenes working out His wonderful purposes. No matter what our trials, we should remember first that He is the God of all grace. This lovely title of our God reminds us that His dealings with us are not based on what we deserve, but on His thoughts of love to us. No matter how fierce our testing, we can always be thankful, we are not in hell where we ought to be.
A second strong consolation is that He has called us to His eternal glory. This enables us to look beyond the sufferings of this life to the time when we shall be with the Savior and be like Him forever. Just think of it! We have been picked up from the scrap heap and called to His eternal glory!
A third comfort is that suffering is just for a while. When contrasted with the eternal glory, life’s afflictions are less than momentary. We too are called to His eternal glory through Christ. The path of suffering, and that path alone leads to the world where suffering is unknown. The suffering is only for a little while. God will ultimately perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle us.
Perfect—Trials make the believer fit, that nothing is lacking; they supply needed elements in his character to make him spiritually mature.
Establish—Suffering makes Christians more stable, able to maintain a good confession, and to bear up under pressure. That we may not waver. This is the same word the Lord Jesus used with Peter: “. . establish your brethren.” (Luke_22:32).
Strengthen—Satan intends persecution to weaken and wear out believers, but it has the opposite effect. With the Lord’s help, we may stand and withstand to endure.
Settle—This verb is related to the word “foundation” in the original. God wants every believer to be firmly planted in a secure place in His Son and His word.
These expressions show that perseverance and progress in grace are first to be sought after by every Christian. The power of these doctrines on the hearts and the fruits in the lives showed who are partakers of the grace of God. The cherishing and increase of Christian love, and of affection one to another, is no matter of empty compliment, but the stamp and badge of Jesus Christ on His followers. In life or death, God’s purposes will be accomplished, and His promises to believers will be fulfilled because believers have been called into God’s eternal glory.
Lord Jesus, we thank you that You are the God of all grace. Perfect us to be spiritually mature, establish us to bear all the trials, strengthen us to endure in our difficult times and settle us to be with You for eternity. Glory and dominion are indeed Thine for ever and ever. Amen.
