Pakistani Christian sentenced to death for “blasphemy” | SW NEWS | 152
A court in Pakistan has sentenced a 37-year-old Christian man to death after he was accused of breaching the country’s blasphemy laws. Father of four, Asif Pervaiz, was found guilty on Tuesday by a court in the eastern city of Lahore. Mr. Pervaiz is accused of having sent “blasphemous” text messages to a former supervisor at work back in 2013. He was soon arrested and has been in prison awaiting trial ever since. Mr. Pervaiz told the court that the allegation was a fabrication, concocted after he refused to yield to pressure from his former supervisor to convert from Christianity to Islam. Mr. Pervaiz’s lawyer now intends to appeal this week’s death sentence to a higher court.
