New footage of huge explosion ripping through Beirut hospital

Newly released CCTV footage showed the moment a huge explosion ripped through a Beirut hospital, smashing windows and collapsing furniture as medical workers and patients run for cover.

Last Tuesday’s (August 4) explosion, which injured more than 6,000 people, caused widespread damage to Lebanon’s oldest hospital, the St. George Hospital, which captured the devastating impact.

The hospital lies less than a mile from Beirut’s port – the epicentre of the warehouse blast, which the authorities have said was caused by over 2,000 tonnes of highly explosive ammonium nitrate igniting.

Three hospitals in the Lebanese capital were destroyed and 12 other facilities damaged by the blast, as well as swathes of the city. Over 170 people were killed, including four nurses working at the St. George Hospital.

The explosion triggered protests, with demonstrators calling for the government to be punished for negligence they say led to the incident, compounding months of political and economic meltdown.

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Hassan Diab announced on Monday (August 10) the resignation of his government, saying the detonation of the highly-explosive material stored at the port for the last seven years was “the result of endemic corruption.”
